This is unfortunate because very little is known about Matt. He was an orphan at Wammy’s House with Mello and Near and third in line to take over from L. Near and Mello being ahead of him. He was only featured in the manga for a short time but it’s shown that he is Mello’s cohort and friend, which is curious, as a character like Mello would seem to not have any friends that would put up with him.

He’s got some serious skill though, including his smarts. Weapons, espionage, video games, as said—he’s third in line for L, he’s got it down. At times, even if featured only for a short time, he says a lot less then Mello and doesn’t explode in a temper like Mello but can seem pretty fucking hardcore. He’s a cigarette junkie and always seems able to supply weapons like nobody’s business, from handguns to semi-automatic machine guns.

Matt appears to be much more laid-back, commenting on cute girls and, of course, video games but he doesn’t like to go out, implying a more closed off, reserved nature. There are times when he doesn’t pay as close attention as he should—like when he let Misa and Mogi slip right out of sight by accident and called Mello in an instant, leaving his cohort frustrated.

Matt seems the kind of character that would run guns, smoke a little pot, play a game or two, maybe do some corporate hacking for gun and take the rest of the day off---on a normal day, anyway. But on business, it’s business (for the most part, he’s pretty laid-back) and he’ll follow Mello’s instructions when needed.

But this is what I infer from what we are shown of him. He only appears for a short time and is then murdered.
